A wedding in South Tyrol: what makes the region different

Trentino-Alto Adige is made of two autonomous provinces: South Tyrol (Alto Adige, capital Bolzano) in the north and Trentino (capital Trento) in the south. South Tyrol is officially bilingual, Italian and German, and in Val Gardena and Alta Badia the Ladin language is spoken too, so menus, signs and traditions mix Alpine and Italian culture. For your guests this means a wedding that feels unlike the lakes or Tuscany: mountain hotels with spas, meadows instead of gardens, and a cuisine that goes from canederli to refined fine dining. Our guide to the Dolomites wedding covers the landscapes and the style of these celebrations.

Each valley has its own character. Val Gardena (Alpenroyal) is the most international, with Selva at the foot of the Sella group. Alta Badia (Rifugio Col Pradat) is quieter and known for its food. The Alpe di Siusi (Tirler) is a vast high plateau of meadows, and Val Pusteria (Castel Badia) is a wide valley of villages and castles near Brunico.

Getting there and moving guests

Bolzano airport is the closest to Val Gardena and Alta Badia, with scheduled SkyAlps flights; the airports of Verona, Venice and Treviso are the usual alternatives, and Innsbruck and Munich work well for guests coming from northern Europe. Brunico is the nearest railway station for Alta Badia, about 30 km away, and Alta Badia runs an airport shuttle from Thursday to Sunday. For the wedding day itself we plan shuttles for the guests, because the mountain venues are spread across several valleys.

The Alpe di Siusi needs special attention. It is a protected area and private cars cannot drive up freely: hotel guests may drive to their accommodation on the arrival and departure days, and during their stay only before 10 am and after 5 pm, with a permit issued by the hotel. Everyone else uses the cable car from Siusi. We plan arrivals at Tirler around these rules, and around room blocks if you need a wedding with accommodation.

Legal wedding or symbolic ceremony in South Tyrol

A symbolic ceremony needs no documents and can be held in the venue garden or meadow. Civil weddings are celebrated by the municipality, and in South Tyrol several municipalities now limit them for couples from abroad: a July 2026 report based on a survey by the daily Dolomiten found that Fiè allo Sciliar has capped international weddings at five a year, Lana has stopped marrying non-residents and Appiano charges non-residents double, while procedures through the consulates can take up to six months. If a legal ceremony in Italy matters to you, read about the civil ceremony rules and tell us early, so we can check the municipality of your venue.

Trentino, Lake Garda and smaller celebrations

Our published packages are currently all on the South Tyrol side. For a venue in the province of Trento, such as Madonna di Campiglio or the Val di Fassa, ask our team. If you prefer water to mountains, the nearest option is a Lake Garda wedding package. Planning a proposal first?
