Beach Wedding in Italy: Venues, Rules & Prices

A beach wedding in Italy usually means a ceremony by the sea rather than on the sand: a cliff terrace, a sea-view garden, a private boat or a tower over the water. Our seaside packages cost from €2,400 for two to €65,000 for 50 guests, with celebrant, flowers and coordination included. A legal civil ceremony on the sand is possible only on beaches that the town has officially designated.

Can You Legally Get Married on a Beach in Italy?

Yes, but only in specific places. Under article 106 of the Italian Civil Code, a civil marriage is celebrated publicly in the town hall.

Towns can open separate registry offices outside the town hall, under article 3 of Presidential Decree 396/2000. The place must be designated by the town council executive and be available to the town on a lasting basis, not for a single wedding.

The Council of State confirmed this approach in opinion no. 196 of 22 January 2014. The Comune di Chiavari summarises these rules in its public notice on wedding venues.

Example: the Beaches of Cabras, Sardinia

The town of Cabras, on the Sinis peninsula, has designated beaches for civil weddings. Its council resolution no. 50 of 18 March 2022 lists the beaches of San Giovanni di Sinis, Maimoni, Is Arutas and Mari Ermi, each mapped in an annex.

Rules and fees change from town to town. Before any plan, we check whether the beach you like has been designated, and what the town charges.

The Easier Route: a Symbolic Ceremony

A symbolic ceremony has no legal effect, so it can take place on a boat, a terrace or a beach. You can marry legally at home, then hold the ceremony by the sea in Italy.

All our elopement packages use a symbolic ceremony with a celebrant and the Red Ribbon Ritual. To marry legally in Italy, read our guide for getting married in Italy as a US citizen, or how to elope in Italy.

Can You Have a Beach Club Wedding in Italy?

A reception at a beach club, a stabilimento balneare, is a private agreement with the club. Dinner, music and the party follow the club’s own rules and opening season.

A legal ceremony at the club is a different matter. It is possible only if the town has designated that venue as a separate registry office, for example through a free loan agreement, which lasts three years in the Chiavari notice.

We do not publish a beach club package. If you have a specific club in mind, we check both points with the club and the town.

Best Coastlines for a Seaside Wedding in Italy

Each coast has its own landscape. These are the areas where we publish packages, plus the beaches designated in Sardinia.

Amalfi Coast and Sorrento

Cliffs, terraced villages and views over the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno. Hotel Tramonto d’Oro offers a panoramic corner for two from €2,800, or its Sala Panoramica for 50 guests at €49,000.

In Sorrento, Capo Santa Fortunata is a green cape of olive and citrus gardens with private sea access and views of Vesuvius. Read our Amalfi Coast wedding cost guide and the list of Amalfi Coast wedding venues.

Capri

Capri works best for couples. The Garden Wedding faces the Faraglioni for €2,500, and the Moonlight Cruise holds the ceremony on board at sunset for €3,700.

See our guide to a luxury wedding in Capri for venues with guests.

Portofino and the Italian Riviera

Portofino is best seen from the water. Our Secret Portofino is a ceremony on a private boat for €2,400. Into The Blue Portofino reaches the San Fruttuoso Abbey, in a cove, for €7,900.

For guests, Grand Hotel Miramare in Santa Margherita Ligure has a sea-view terrace for 50 guests at €49,000. See our pages on weddings in Liguria, a wedding in Portofino and the Portofino wedding cost.

Cinque Terre and Portovenere

In Monterosso al Mare, our packages use Hotel Porto Roca, on the cliff, and Torre Aurora, a 16th-century tower on the sea rock.

Portovenere sits at the tip of the Gulf of Poets. Choose the Grand Hotel Portovenere or the medieval Torre Capitolare. More ideas in our guide to a Cinque Terre elopement.

Sardinia

Sardinia has the beaches officially designated for civil weddings in Cabras. For a full celebration, our Mediterranean Garden Wedding at Stazzo Lu Ciaccaru lasts three days for 70 guests, at €119,000.

That package is set in a garden estate, not on the beach. A beach ceremony can be planned around it on request.

Sicily and Puglia

Our Sicily and Puglia packages are in country estates close to the coast, not on the sand. Donna Coraly is a fortified estate a few minutes from Siracusa and the sea.

Masseria Spina is a historic masseria near Monopoli, a few minutes from the Adriatic. Sicilian packages start at €3,400 for two at The Sicilian Garden Escape; in Puglia, Authentic Wedding in Puglia costs €44,000 for 60 guests.

A Beach on the Lake

The only private beach ceremony in our catalogue is on a lake. Whispers on the Lake: The Private Beach Elopement at Hotel Filario, on Lake Como, costs €2,900, or €3,800 with a private boat tour.

Practical Tips for a Wedding by the Sea

  • Time the ceremony. Late afternoon light is softer and cooler. Several packages are built around sunset.
  • Plan for wind. Choose a light veil, weigh down the flowers and keep a hair tie for the photos on the water.
  • Shoes. Terraces, rocks and boat decks call for flat or block heels. Sand calls for bare feet.
  • Guests and steps. Cliff venues on the Amalfi Coast and in the Cinque Terre often mean stairs. Tell us about older guests early.
  • Boats. Boat transfers depend on sea conditions, so every boat package has a timeline that can move.
  • Menu. Fish, lemons and local wine suit a seaside table. See our Italian wedding menu ideas.

Prefer a ritual with a natural feel? A handfasting ceremony works well by the water.

When to Plan a Beach Wedding in Italy

PeriodWhat to expect
May and JuneLong days and warm evenings, before the peak of the summer season
July and AugustPeak beach season; coastal roads, harbours and hotels are at their busiest
SeptemberWarm sea and evenings, with fewer visitors after the summer holidays
October to AprilCooler and quieter; terraces and indoor halls work better than the beach

Book well ahead for weekends between June and September. For two, an elopement date can often be found later, as long as the venue is free.

To keep the group small, read our guide to an intimate wedding in Italy by the sea, or Tuscany’s coast in Versilia.

How We Plan a Seaside Wedding

  • Choose the coast and the format: a ceremony for two, a boat, a cliff terrace or a wedding with guests.
  • Legal or symbolic: we check if a legal ceremony is possible at that place, or plan a symbolic one.
  • Date and venue: we confirm availability and the timeline, including boats and sunset time.
  • Extras: photography, music and transfers, at the published prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a small beach wedding cost?

A ceremony for two by the sea costs €2,400 to €7,900 with our published packages, celebrant and flowers included. A small wedding for 30 guests starts at €32,000 at the Grand Hotel Portovenere, with dinner, florals, photographer, videomaker and planner. Extras such as a band are added separately.

Can you legally get married on a beach in Italy?

Only on a beach that the town has designated as a separate registry office, such as the beaches listed by the town of Cabras in Sardinia. Elsewhere, a civil marriage takes place in the town hall or another designated venue. A symbolic ceremony can take place on any beach the owner allows.

What are the best beaches in Italy to get married?

For a legal civil ceremony, the beaches designated by Cabras: San Giovanni di Sinis, Maimoni, Is Arutas and Mari Ermi. For a symbolic ceremony by the sea, the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Portofino, the Cinque Terre and Portovenere offer terraces, coves and boats with sea views.

Can you have a beach club wedding in Italy?

Yes, as a reception: the beach club sets its own rules, menu and season. A legal ceremony at the club is possible only if the town has designated it as a separate registry office. Otherwise, marry at the town hall or hold a symbolic ceremony at the club.
