Can You Legally Get Married in Venice?

Yes. Foreign couples can have a legal civil wedding in Venice, performed by a city registrar of the Comune di Venezia, and it is valid at home. The alternative is a symbolic ceremony, which is what all our elopement packages include.

Symbolic ceremony

A symbolic ceremony has no legal value in Italy, so there are no Italian documents, no fixed hours and no limits on the place. It can take place on a gondola, in a private garden or on a rooftop. You sign the legal marriage at home before or after the trip, and Venice is where you say your vows.

Civil ceremony at the town hall

The Comune di Venezia lists its wedding halls. The best known is Palazzo Cavalli, a Renaissance palace on the Grand Canal near the Rialto Bridge. Fees for non-EU citizens are published on the Comune costs page; these are the figures at the time of writing:

Comune di Venezia fee (non-EU citizens)Amount
Ceremony in standard hours (Monday to Saturday, 8:45–13:00)€1,700
Outside standard hours, weekday€2,100
Outside standard hours, day before a public holiday€2,400
Outside standard hours, public holiday€3,600
Interpreter service€300
Civil wedding in an authorised private location (all-inclusive fee)€10,000

Couples from EU countries pay €700 in standard hours. Fees can change, so we check them again when we book your date.

Documents for a civil elopement

The Comune publishes the documents required from foreigners. They depend on your nationality:

  • US and Australian citizens: a sworn declaration made at your consulate in Italy and then legalised at the Prefettura, or a declaration made at the Italian consulate in your home country.
  • UK citizens: a certificate of no impediment with apostille and translation, plus a bilingual sworn declaration made before a notary, also with apostille.
  • Other countries: a certificate of no impediment or of legal capacity to marry, issued by your authorities or by your embassy or consulate in Italy.

You also need valid passports, two adult witnesses with ID and an interpreter if you do not speak Italian. Even an elopement for two needs the two witnesses, so decide early who they will be. Our guide to getting married in Italy as a US citizen walks through each step.

Where to Elope: Gondolas, Gardens and Rooftops

Venice has no cars, so every setting is reached on foot or by boat. Our packages use five kinds of place, each with a different mood.

  • A gondola on the canals. Venice In Love and The Secret Canal hold the ceremony on board a private gondola, through the quiet rii and under the Bridge of Sighs, with a serenade by the gondolier.
  • A palazzo garden on the Grand Canal. The Venetian Garden Elopement uses the private garden of Palazzo Nani Bernardo, or its second piano nobile when the weather turns.
  • A rooftop above the Grand Canal. The Grand Canal Love Story climbs the monumental staircase of a palazzo near the Rialto to a rooftop over the canal and the roofs of the city.
  • A secret garden. Secret Whisper and Unforgettable Love end in a walled garden with an ancient well, near the Rialto, with a private dinner after the vows.
  • The lagoon. San Giorgio Maggiore, facing St Mark’s Square, is the setting for photos in The Secret Canal and Unforgettable Love; Just Us Infinity Venice adds a boat to Murano.

For a wedding with more guests, our wedding in Venice guide covers the palazzi and the three Grand Canal wedding packages from €59,000.

Best Time of Year for a Venice Elopement

May, June and September are the most requested months: long days, warm evenings and soft light on the canals. July and August are hot and crowded, so ceremonies move to the late afternoon or to sunset.

Acqua alta, the high tide that floods low parts of the city, happens mainly between October and January. The MOSE flood barriers are now raised during the highest tides, so flooding is much rarer, but low areas such as St Mark’s Square can still get wet. Autumn and winter elopements need an indoor option, which is why the garden package includes the palazzo’s piano nobile.

February brings Carnival. Masks and costumes make striking photos, but hotels are at their most expensive and the streets are full, so book early or choose another month.

The quietest hours are early morning and sunset. A gondola or rooftop ceremony at golden hour avoids most of the day visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you elope in Venice?

Yes. You can elope in Venice with a symbolic ceremony on a gondola, in a palazzo garden or on a rooftop, with no Italian paperwork. You can also marry legally with a civil ceremony of the Comune di Venezia, for example at Palazzo Cavalli on the Grand Canal. Our packages for two start at €2,500.

How do you plan a Venice elopement?

Choose a package and check the date online. For a symbolic ceremony, that is almost all: we organise the boats, celebrant, flowers and photographer. For a legal wedding, also request the Comune date, prepare the documents for your nationality, bring two witnesses and book an interpreter.

Where can you get married privately in Venice?

The most private settings are a gondola on the small canals, the garden of Palazzo Nani Bernardo on the Grand Canal, a palazzo rooftop near the Rialto and a walled secret garden in the historic centre. Early morning and sunset are the quietest times of day.

How much does a Venice elopement cost?

Our seven Venice elopement packages cost from €2,500 for a gondola ceremony to €9,800 for two days with a night in a canal-view apartment. A civil ceremony adds the Comune fee, €1,700 for non-EU citizens in standard hours, plus €300 for the interpreter.

Can you legally get married in Venice?

Yes. A civil wedding performed by a registrar of the Comune di Venezia is legally valid and is registered in your home country afterwards. You need passports, the declaration or certificate required for your nationality, two adult witnesses and an interpreter if you do not speak Italian.
