The Experience
You lift off before the sun does, and by the time the basket clears the cypresses the whole of Chianti is underneath you — vineyards, stone farmhouses, the mist still sitting in the valleys. The balloon is yours alone. As it rises, the banner unfurls beneath it: Will you marry me. Nobody else is up there, nobody else hears the answer. Two and a half hours later you come down in a field somewhere between the vines, and a toast is waiting with a tasting of the produce that grows exactly where you have just been flying.
The Setting: the Chianti Hills at First Light
Balloons fly at dawn because that is when the air is still. It also happens to be when Chianti looks best: the light comes in low across the ridges, the villages catch it one by one, and the vineyards run out to the horizon in every direction. You are alone in the basket with the pilot, a few hundred metres above one of the most photographed landscapes in the world.
