The Experience
The historic villas of Lake Como are not open to the general public in the way that other Italian landmarks are. They are private properties, foundations and state-managed gardens — five centuries of Italian landscape architecture collected along one lake. Villa del Balbianello, on its terraced promontory at the tip of a peninsula, has served as a film location for Star Wars and Casino Royale. Villa Monastero extends nearly two kilometres along the Varenna shore. Villa Melzi was the first neoclassical villa built on the Lario. Villa Cipressi occupies its hillside with century-old cypress trees and lake views from every terrace. Villa Carlotta blazes in spring with azaleas and camellias. The private boat ceremony takes place on the lake with the red ribbon ritual. The villa visit that follows is yours exclusively for 90 minutes, with the photographer working through every corner of the garden.
