The icons are free but belong to whoever is standing there, so they only work in the first hour of daylight. The private settings cost more but give you the frame, the time and the silence. St. Mark’s Square at sunrise
The only square in Venice that feels like a stage. With the Basilica, the Campanile and the Procuratie around you it is unbeatable at first light, when it is almost empty and the mosaics catch the sun. By mid-morning it is one of the most crowded places in Europe, so we only recommend it at dawn. Sunrise in Venice is roughly 5:15 in June and 7:45 in late December. The square is also the lowest point of the city: on high autumn tides it is the first place to get wet, so we always keep a second position ready nearby. A gondola on the quiet canals
The gondola is the proposal most couples dream of, and it works best away from the Grand Canal traffic, on the narrow rii behind San Marco and Castello or through Dorsoduro. We plan the route so the question happens at a precise point, usually under a chosen bridge or at a turn where the light opens up, with the photographer already in position on the fondamenta. The Bridge of Sighs
The legend says that couples who kiss in a gondola under the Bridge of Sighs at sunset will love each other forever. The bridge itself is seen from Ponte della Paglia, which is crowded all day, so the romantic version is from the water: the gondola passes beneath it and the photographer works from the bridge. Early morning is the calmest moment. The bridge itself is an enclosed passage inside the Doge’s Palace, so nobody proposes on it: with our Bridge of Sighs Sunset Proposal (€1,600) you stand with the bridge behind you, on Ponte della Paglia or the quieter Ponte della Canonica, and a gondola beneath it can be added on request.
Rialto Bridge
Iconic, and the spot locals tell you to avoid by day: the steps are packed from breakfast to late evening. At sunrise it is a different place, with the Grand Canal still and pink. Accademia Bridge

San Giorgio Maggiore
The island facing St. Mark’s gives you the whole skyline of Venice from across the water, and its bell tower (with a lift) has one of the finest views in the city. The waterfront by the church is calm even when San Marco is not, which makes it one of our favourite semi-private settings in late afternoon. It is a short vaporetto or water-taxi ride away. Scala Contarini del Bovolo
A Renaissance spiral staircase hidden in a courtyard near Campo Manin, with a loggia that looks over the rooftops. It is one of the most photogenic spots in Venice and it has opening hours and tickets, so a proposal here depends on the venue’s availability and written confirmation. Private historic gardens
Venice hides hundreds of gardens behind high walls, and almost nobody sees them. A walled garden with an ancient Venetian well, climbing roses and a gate that closes is the setting we recommend to couples who say privacy matters more than a landmark. A palazzo garden on the Grand Canal

Some of the most beautiful proposals we have planned happened on bridges that have no name on tourist maps: a small bridge over a quiet rio in Castello or Cannaregio, wisteria overhead in spring, a gondola passing below. These are the spots we scout for each couple, because they change with the season and the light.
Gondola Proposal in Venice: How It Really Works
A gondola proposal looks effortless in photographs. In practice it is a small operation on the water, and these are the details that make the difference:
- The price. Gondola fares are regulated by the City of Venice: €90 for a 30-minute ride by day and €110 after 7 p.m., for up to five passengers. Extra time is charged in blocks, and a singer is not included in the fare. Always agree the total before boarding (source: Visit Venice gondola guide).
- The route. The Grand Canal is spectacular but busy with vaporetti and water taxis. We choose quieter canals for the moment itself and use the Grand Canal for the view before or after.
- The exact point. We agree with the gondolier where to slow down: under a specific bridge, at a turn where the light opens, or at a private landing where flowers are waiting.
- The photographer. From a gondola you cannot photograph yourselves well. The photographer waits on a bridge or a fondamenta ahead of the route and shoots as you pass.
- The ring. Keep it in a closed box in an inside pocket until the moment, and do not kneel on the floor of the gondola: stay seated and turn towards her. Rings do fall into canals.

The Best Time to Propose in Venice
The best hour
Dawn for public places: St. Mark’s, Rialto, the Bridge of Sighs. Golden hour for the gondola and for rooftops. Evening for private gardens, candlelight and dinner. Venice empties of day-trippers in the evening, which is why overnight guests see a completely different city.
The best season
- Spring (April–May): gardens in bloom, mild air, wisteria on the bridges. Popular, so book early.
- Summer (June–September): long warm evenings, perfect for sunset proposals; July and August are very crowded in the middle of the day. The Festa del Redentore in July ends with a fireworks night over the Bacino di San Marco: together with New Year’s Eve, it is one of the rare nights when fireworks light up the city.
- Autumn (October–November): our favourite. Warm golden light, fewer visitors, a more intimate city. It is also the start of the high-water season.
- Winter (December–March): fog, silence and very few tourists. Carnival in February adds masks and costumes, perfect for a theatrical proposal like A Venetian Dream.
Acqua alta and the Venice access fee
Acqua alta (high water) happens mostly between autumn and winter and usually lasts a few hours around high tide. The MOSE barriers are raised for the strongest tides, but St. Mark’s Square can still get wet on higher days, so for those months we always pair a public spot with a covered or elevated alternative.
The access fee: on selected days day-trippers pay a Venice access fee. In 2026 it applied on set days from April to July, between 8:30 and 16:00, at €5 booked in advance or €10 at the last minute, and it does not apply from October to December 2026. Guests who sleep in a hotel or apartment in the Municipality of Venice are exempt but need to download the exemption voucher. Check the calendar for your dates on the official access fee website.
